Hair Clip Redesign

I redesigned an existing hair clip with a greater focus on:

Ergonomics
Aesthetics
Durability
Minimalism


The Original Design
  • Bought in bulk and affordable
  • Rather flimsy and easily taken apart
  • Rubber piece can be detached and reattached, but connecting bar cannot
  • Little focus on visual appeal




Sketches


Ideation process with the design goals in mind. I kept the mechanism from the original design and aimed to hide it entirely, rather than improving on functionality, for a more refined and aesthetic appearance. One big change is making the connecting bar detactable so that certain parts can be replaced with ease.

Further Considerations


The top half of the hair clip goes in a little deep, which may crease the hair if used for long periods of time.

The connection is rather weak because the force opening the hair clip can cause the connecting bar to snap out. Relocating the snap and lock opening will be needed if the design is to be manufactured.
